EDUCATIONAL OVERVIEW
In the last decade there have been many advances in the field of pain management. Clinicians, including pain specialists, physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other allied healthcare professionals, must understand and recognize these new developments in order to accurately evaluate and assess pain. A new and important strategy in the healthcare field is the utilization of patient-centered approaches to pain management. However, this requires greater knowledge and skills as well as applying those skills in understanding the mechanisms of pain and in utilizing the available agents to provide effective and safe pain relief.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is designed for all healthcare professionals on the frontline of managing patients with chronic pain, including physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and psychologists.
This activity will be especially beneficial for those interested in pain management, new drug therapies, and improving the care of patients experiencing chronic pain.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Learners participating in the program will be able, at its conclusion to:

  • Utilize patient-centered approaches to effectively manage chronic pain
  • Discuss evidence-based strategies to manage different types of patients experiencing chronic pain
  • Select an appropriate analgesic based on patient factors and pain type

EDUCATIONAL FORMAT
This webcast on demand is based on the proceedings of a continuing education symposium held in conjunction with the 31st Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Pain Society on May 18, 2012 in Honolulu, HI.

   

This activity emphasizes the importance of individualizing treatment decisions when trying to assess and alleviate chronic pain. This involves understanding the patients’ perspective on how pain has impacted their quality of life and applying a patient-centered approach to care.
